在传统道教斋醮仪式中，各有一定称谓和职守的道士，统称为执事，即醮坛执事。据《金篆大斋补职说成仪》，执事主要有：高功：位居各执事之首。担任者必须“道德内充，威仪外备，天人归向，鬼神具瞻”；在仪式中要“蹑景飞晨，承颜宣德，惠周三界，礼越众官”。监斋：位仅次于高功。其职守，一为“总握宪章，典领科禁，纠正坛职，振肃朝纲”；二为“周密察非，从容授简，有严有翼，毋滥毋堕”。即主管科仪典法，为高功的副手。都讲：与高功、监斋合称“三法师”。担任者必须“洞辅该通，法度明练，赞唱仪钜，领袖班联”；“玄坛步趋，升座讲说。昭符人望，默契人心”。即主管唱赞导引，亦为高功的副手。以上三职，正一派称为“三法师”，全真派仅称“高功”，无“法师”之称。但三者在斋醮科仪中各有明确职能，相辅相成，共同发挥对科仪的主导作用
